After much deliberation and stakeholder conversations with alumni and faculty, we’ve decided to reschedule the M Squared event to a later date (tentatively targeting February 2019 - Black History Month) to allow for the controversial issue surrounding the relocation of the Confederate Monument (aka “Silent Sam”) to be settled. A recommendation from the Chancellor and Board of Trustees is due to the Board of Governors by November 15, 2018.M Squared’s mission underscores the importance of equity, diversity and inclusion, which will be undermined by the reinstallment of such a degrading figure on UNC Chapel Hill’s campus. Although several boycotts have been planned, several members of the M Squared planning team plan to attend Homecoming and use such time for meetings with key stakeholders to determine our role in bringing this issue to closure. We hope you understand this decision. Know that we appreciate your support and hope that we can count on you again in 2019!
